Kubota

Framed Broadside. 36.8 cm x 25.4 cm. 2019
Handset Bembo and Palatino types, hand carved linoleum block.

This broadside honors the visionary gardener, Fujitaro Kubota who created a twenty acre Japanese garden in Seattle. The garden’s history reflects the intersection of cultures, history, and nature which is referenced in this poem by Shankar Narayan. Before and after he was interned in a prison camp during WWII, Mr. Kubota worked on his garden, clearing a swath of undeveloped land. He also created a garden while at Minidoka Internment Camp. His legacy has continued as a gift to the city and people of Seattle as the poem says, “They never could stop your roots.”
